How Acupuncture Works

East Asian practitioners discoveredSeveral thousand years ago, East Asian practitioners discovered that the body forms disharmonies as a result of the various physical, mental, and emotional stresses of life.

Oriental medical theory explains that disharmonies in the body are a result in an imbalance of opposing forces called Yin and Yang. This imbalance disrupts the movement of the body’s vital energy along the meridian pathways, which are channels through which the body’s energy is thought to flow. Qi also encourages Blood to circulate. Acupuncture balances Yin/Yang, and restores the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, bringing a healthy balanced state.

In modern terms, Qi refers to healthy oxygenated blood that flows through blood vessels. In pain and illness blood flow to injured/diseased areas is impeded. Acupuncture brings healthy oxygenated blood to diseased areas, allowing more rapid healing to occur. Furthermore, with chronic pain, acupuncture stimulates the midbrain to release your body’s own pain killers and improve circulation, speeding up the healing process.

By inserting and manipulating sterile medical grade stainless steel hair-thin needles at specific points, we are able to return the body to its natural balance and promote the body’s ability to heal itself.

There are many types of acupuncture. We use several acupuncture techniques, such as Dr Richard Tan’s Balance method and DNA® (distal needle acupuncture) which can immediately relieve acute and chronic pain. In stubborn pain or numbness, electro-stimulation acupuncture is used.  Traditional Chinese acupuncture and optimal acupuncture are used for internal problems, such as indigestion, PMS, hot flashes, mood swings, problems with fertility (both female and male). For emotional and/or emotional-spiritual imbalance, five element acupuncture can be used to help you move through some of life’s difficult phases, helping with anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Finally, as ears contain hundreds of acupuncture points, we use ear acupuncture and or ear seeds alone, or to boost treatments. Ear acupuncture is often used for weight loss and quitting smoking.
