Did you know that your ears contain hundreds of acupuncture points? At Hoku, ear or auricular acupuncture will be given in most cases, as “add-ons” to your regular acupuncture treatment. We use this technique mostly for addictions, stress relief, and pain.
In advanced acupuncture theory, the ear is considered to be an image that reflects the entire human body. This means each area of your ear will treat a corresponding area in your body. Some areas represent your head, spinal column, trunk, hips, shoulders, arms, or legs. Other areas correspond to internal organs, such as the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, and Stomach. Others to the brain and nervous system. Some points are calming, or detoxifying working well to treat addictions as is seen in the NADA protocol that is used to help you quit smoking, lose weight, or even get off strong painkillers.
After an acupuncture treatment, we may insert what are called “ear seeds” onto the fleshy areas of your ears to make your acupuncture treatment last longer. The ones classically used were from the vaccaria (cowherb, cow soapwort) plant. Today there are many types of seeds available, most of which are made from synthetic substances, magnets, metals, and even crystals. For a stronger effect, tiny ear tacks may be placed. All are covered with a square of adhesive tape. On average, 2-5 seeds can be placed on your ears to help your acupuncture treatment work longer. Ear seeds can also be applied to children to help with allergies, anxiety, and other illnesses. You will be instructed as to how to press them for better effect; they may stay in place for several days unless they cause irritation.
