Many first-time patients are concerned that acupuncture needles will feel like hypodermic injections at the doctor’s office, or IMS at the physiotherapist's. It won't feel like that. Acupuncture uses sterile medical grade stainless steel, hair-thin, flexible needles that you will hardly feel when they are inserted. When the needles are gently stimulated they may produce a unique sensation that Oriental Medicine calls de qi, or "the arrival of qi". Patients often describe this as a dull, heavy, achy pressure, or a spreading, traveling movement. You may also feel an "electrical" sensation moving strongly down the meridian pathways. These sensations last only 1-2 seconds. Let Angela know if the sensation lasts longer so the needles can be adjusted. Depending on the style of acupuncture used, you can generally expect approximately 20 quick needle insertions. Most patients find acupuncture deeply satisfying, often falling asleep, and leave the treatment feeling relaxed both mentally and physically. In fact, they are often so relaxed it is wise not to drive for at least 20 minutes if you are feeling a bit too relaxed. Eating a light meal before acupuncture may help minimize this.

Acupuncture creates deep relaxation
in both mind and body.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative, It is important to understand that, although this does happen occasionally, acupuncture is not a "one-time only miracle treatment". Acupuncture is cumulative in that each treatment builds upon the progress of the previous one. It, like a medication, is dose-dependent so you will need to embark on a certain number of treatments, spaced at first weekly or twice weekly to get the desired effect. At the 4-6th treatment Angela will discuss your progress with you and will decide if more visits are needed, and how far apart they should be. She will work with you to find a treatment plan specific to your needs.

Angela has 15 years of trusted acupuncture experience. With this experience, Angela has seen the best results if she treats you once or twice a week, depending on your situation. When she sees improvement, then the visits can start stretching out further apart. Maintenance appointments can be booked if needed. Preventative treatments and those for general well-being may also be scheduled on an as-needed basis. With this in mind, the best way to treat is the Yellow Emperor's Way. A good doctor keeps the emperor healthy; he doesn't wait until the illness gets worse in order to treat. That is why Chinese Medicine is called "gardening medicine". The best way to treat is to educate you on how to stay healthy instead of waiting too long, making the condition more difficult to treat. It is wise to be seen sooner rather than later. It is also wise to follow a course of treatment of 4 visits in order to see how well acupuncture works for you.

How Long is a Treatment?

At Hoku, we dedicate 1 1/2 hours to your first appointment so we can go over your intake forms and give you a treatment. If you have several different symptoms or diseases, we may ask you to fill out forms in advance. Rest assured--if you are in pain, you will have an acupuncture treatment on your first visit. Subsequent treatments are 1 hour in duration.

What kind of Acupuncture does Angela do?

Angela practices a variety of acupuncture techniques, some of which, like Master Tung, M-test, 5-element, Balance Method, or Distal Needle Acupuncture™ technique are quite advanced. She also practices local needling, selecting ashi and trigger points. A method will be chosen that will suit your individual case. She will know if you respond to acupuncture in 4 visits, fewer if Distal Needle Acupuncture™ is given. No matter what style of acupuncture is used, It does take awhile for the results to last in your body and it is a highly individual phenomenon. The number of treatments you need is variable. Depending on the style of acupuncture given, you can expect to have, on average, up to 20 needle insertions.

Dr Tan's Balance Method, or DNA acupuncture can give you Pain Relief in Seconds

Let Angela know if you have financial concerns and she will discuss them with you. At Hoku we reserve 1 space per calendar month for low income patients.
