What Acupuncture Treats

Many people want to know what acupuncture treats, how acupuncture works, if it is safe, and if it hurts. Here is some helpful information below:

Acupuncture is best known for it's ability to relieve pain. Generally acupuncture works by activating the body's own healing abilities, so it can be beneficial for many health conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) has documented many symptoms, diseases, and conditions that have been shown in controlled clinical trials to be effectively treated with acupuncture. Below are just some common conditions that can be treated, but please feel free to email or call us about your specific health conditions. Please note that in some cases herbs may be required for better results. If you do not see your condition on this partial list, let us know, as it is likely treatable.

How Acupuncture Works:

Several thousand years ago, East Asian practitioners discovered that the body forms disharmonies as a result of the various physical, mental, and emotional stresses of life. How does acupuncture work? Oriental medical theory explains that disharmonies in the body are a result in an imbalance of opposing forces called Yin and Yang. This imbalance disrupts the movement of the body's vital energy (Qi) along the meridian pathways, which are channels through which the body's energy is thought to flow. Qi also encourages Blood to circulate. Acupuncture balances Yin/Yang, and restores the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, bringing a healthy balanced state.

In modern terms, Qi refers to healthy oxygenated blood that flows through blood vessels. In pain and illness blood flow to injured/diseased areas is impeded. Acupuncture brings healthy oxygenated blood to diseased areas, allowing more rapid healing to occur. Furthermore, with chronic pain, acupuncture stimulates the midbrain to release your body's own pain killers and improve circulation, speeding up the healing process.
By inserting and manipulating sterile medical grade stainless steel hair-thin needles at specific points, we are able to return the body to its natural balance and promote the body's ability to heal itself.                 There are many types of acupuncture. We use several acupuncture techniques, such as DNA® (distal needle acupuncture) and Dr Tan Balance acupuncture to encourage healing where there is pain. In stubborn pain, or numbness, electro-stimulation acupuncture is used.  Traditional Chinese acupuncture and optimal acupuncture are used for internal problems, such as indigestion, PMS, hot flashes, mood swings, problems with fertility (both female and male). For emotional and/or emotional-spiritual imbalance, five element acupuncture can be used to help you move through some of life's difficult phases, helping with anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Finally, as ears contain hundreds of acupuncture points, we use ear acupuncture alone, or to boost treatments. Ear acupuncture is often used for weight loss and quitting smoking.

Acupuncture returns the body to its
natural state of balance and harmony.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is used by millions of Americans, and of course Canadians, every year. Acupuncturists are required to undergo extensive education of 2 years related college or university training before attending acupuncture/TCM school. We then take detailed study of human anatomy and training in Clean Needle Technique. Angela has passed the provincial acupuncture and herbal safety courses, and the comprehensive provincial Acupuncture board examinations administered by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncturists CTCMA and is licensed by the province. Acupuncture has been a designated health profession under the Health Protection act since April 1996, and is highly regulated to protect the public. As required by law, pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles must be used to ensure your complete safety.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Angela uses hair thin surgical steel needles. You may feel a little "ouch" sensation for a second, and then it is gone. Many people fall asleep after the needles are inserted. Note that tattoo artists use, on average 0.3-0.35mm needles; When we see someone who is afraid of needles, we use those that are 0.16mm in diameter. On average, 20 gentle insertions are made. Angela is also aware that different people have different tolerances compared to each other, and within themselves so treats accordingly.

Does Angela use more than one Acupuncture Technique?
Yes. Angela's first training was in 5 - element acupuncture, which is often used in mental-emotional problems. While she was learning this technique, she went to TCM school (CCAOM) where TCM acupuncture was taught. This is what most acupuncturists are familiar with. She learned to use Ashi and motor point acupuncture for pain when she started her practice. She now integrates Master Tung, Dr Tan, DNA, M-Test, and Optimal acupuncture into her treatments.

Dr Tan's Balance Method of Acupuncture can relieve pain within seconds
...and Angela has done this, many times
